BOSTON –– Roger Clemens returned to where it all began.
But the nostalgia wasn't enough to trigger a comeback.
When asked if he was contemplating a return to the majors –– on the heels of
making two starts for the Sugarland Skeeters –– Clemens laughed off the
assertion
"I had a lot of ice the last time pitched,"
Clemens said. "It seems to get worse and worse each time. We were just
having fun with it."
The former hurler had just as much fun during Wednesday's
pregame ceremonies when the Red Sox honored the 40 greatest players in
franchise history. As a member of the first reserves, Clemens celebrated 13
successful seasons in Boston.
During that span, he compiled a 192-111 record with a
3.06 ERA and 2,590 strikeouts. While he went on to play for the Blue Jays,
Yankees and Astros, Clemens said the Red Sox would always have a special place
in his heart.
"I've never lost my love for this town,"
Clemens said. "If you ask any of my family members — my wife is over
there with all the boys. That's why we brought Koby and Kory up with me. They
wanted to see it because they were little piss-ants running around here. It was
great to see that.
"When I see people who I love, and cared about me
and I cared about them because not only did I want to win for the people and
the fans, I wanted to win for those guys who really count on you."
And it was a night that Boston baseball fans surely
enjoyed.
