Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher Get Autograph Requests From Maryland State Troopers During Playoff Game Against OriolesWhen people say the O’s aren’t carrying a lot of experience into their American League Division Series against the Yankees, they usually mean the young players.

But on Sunday night, another part of the Orioles contingent was showing that Baltimore may have forgotten what it’s like to be on the big stage — or just the regular baseball stage, for that matter.

Two Maryland state troopers who were at Camden Yards as part of the game’s security detail asked Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher for autographs in the Yankees dugout during the top of the ninth inning, the New York Post reports.

The troopers violated a (very spoken) rule of professional sports, where everyone from team staff to writers to local cops are expected to do their job and refrain from fan-like activities such as asking for autographs or photos. But they also did it at the worst of times as Jeter and Swisher were both due up in the inning, during which the Yankees staged a five-run rally to put themselves ahead for a 7-2 win.

The out-of-line request was poorly timed, and the troopers weren’t even hitting up their own team — a group that’s made great strides this season in putting themselves in the same class as the Yankees.

The Baltimore Sun reported Monday that the Maryland State Police will be reminding officers how they’re supposed to be acting when they do security at the park. A spokesman said the department has “reacted as if it did happen,” and is investigating the situation and possible punishment.

Why all the uproar, though? Who can blame the staties for maybe just trying to spoil the Yankees rally?
