Report: Alex Rodriguez Received Call from Joe Girardi Discussing 2013 Plans, Potential Return to New York

The New York Yankees made two expected moves Monday, locking up sluggers Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson through next season.

While exercising their respective team options came as no surprise — even though Cano and Granderson struggled mightily in the postseason — the biggest news of the New York offseason may come from another aging star.

Alex Rodriguez had a miserable postseason. First he was flirting with fans
during an ALCS game, and then reports came out that the team was offering him in potential deal with the Marlins.

But on Monday, manager Joe Girardi tried to smooth the waters with the third baseman, calling Rodriguez to discuss his options for 2013, according to Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York. He is owed $114 million — not including about $30 million in home run incentives — from the Yankees over the next five years, and his contract contains a full no-trade clause.

ARod hit .120 this postseason and would need to approve any deal before being shipped out of the Bronx.
