The modifications to Fenway Park aren’t the only changes being made by the Red Sox this offseason.

New logos, alternate uniforms and other changes will be made for the 2009 season. The club’s goal is to have the team appearance reflect some of the core traditions of the organization.

The most noticeable change to the uniforms will be the use of logos. The “Hanging Sox” logo that has been with the team since 1931 will be Boston’s new primary logo and will be used more frequently. The “Circle Sox” logo has been redesigned and will be a secondary logo along with the traditional red “B.”

All three logos will be using the same font for lettering, including the words “Boston” and “Red Sox” both appearing in red on the “Circle Sox” logo.

The Sox will now have four uniform options -- home, away and alternates for both. The lettering on all uniforms and logos will have the appearance of hand-cut felt, meant to look more traditional.

The new uniforms also show an effort to add more blue, an old tradition the team has gotten away from in recent years. The new gray road uniforms will feature the word “Boston” across the chest in blue lettering, and the alternate road jersey will be blue and be worn with white pants. Both alternate uniforms will now feature “Hanging Sox” logo hats.

Sox fans against the changes don't need to worry about what they’ll see at Fenway on most nights. No changes have been made to the primary home uniform.

Team ownership and management were first inspired for the uniform changes during a “turn back the clock” game against the Padres on June 22, 2007, in which the team sported gray road uniforms from the early 1980s. It was a traditional look that prompted management to call Major League Baseball with a request to design new uniforms that would reflect the heritage of the long-standing franchise.

The new jersey designs were first shown to over 150 Red Sox Nation citizens at a special event at GameOn! hosted by WCVB’s Steve Lacy. Pitcher Manny Delcarmen and manager Terry Francona were in attendance to present the new jerseys. Former Red Sox players Jim Rice and Jerry Remy were also on hand to enjoy the festivities.

The new jerseys will be available to the public on Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Red Sox store and again from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. during the “Christmas at Fenway” celebration this weekend.

Also, Friday, Dec. 12, from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., members of the Red Sox front office will participate in a "Shirts off our Back" promotion. They will be located at several areas in and around Boston, wearing some of the new primary road uniforms. Fans who specifically compliment them on their jersey will receive the jersey off their back.
