Yale Products Ryan Lavarnway, Craig Breslow Battle for Reputation of Smartest Guy in Red Sox ClubhouseBOSTON –– Yale is taking over Boston’s clubhouse.

By acquiring reliever Craig Breslow in a trade on Tuesday for Matt Albers and promoting catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Pawtucket on Wednesday, the Red Sox received a rare infusion of Yale alumni.

Breslow and Lavarnway are the only active MLB players to have come out of Yale. As a result of the distinction, Lavarnway cracked that he wouldn’t be saddled with as many stereotypes anymore.

“I’ve never claimed to be the smartest guy in any room, but it might be the first time that people don’t give me credit for it,” he said.

When asked if the two Yale standouts could be paired together in a game, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was aware of the unique situation and joked that eventually he’d “have to make that happen.”

But Lavarnway and Breslow are quite familiar with one another. So much so, Lavarnway immediately fired off a text message to his fellow alum upon hearing news of the trade.

“I can’t wait to see him because he’s always been good to me,” Lavarnway said. “He’s a great guy, and I look forward to working with him.”

And so, in the shadow of rival Harvard, the two Bulldogs will get a chance to shine together.
